Calvin Arnold-Valdez

RED MESA — Funeral services for Calvin Joseph Arnold-Valdez, 73, will be 10 a.m., Feb. 5, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup. The Rev. Blane Grein, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Gallup. A rosary will be recited at Rollie Mortuary.

Arnold-Valdez died Feb. 1, 2009, in Chinle. He was born Sept. 19, 1935, in Albuquerque, into the Red House People Clan for the Mexican People Clan.

Arnold-Valdez attended school in Gallup and was in the U.S. Navy. He worked with the Navajo Tribe, he was an electrician in California, and worked with Chinle Elementary School.

Arnold-Valdez loved to cook, enjoyed watching football and caring for his lawn.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Arnold-Valdez; sons, Calvin A. Arnold of Red Mesa, Mark Arnold of Mesa, Robert I. Arnold of Red Mesa; daughters, Teri Talker of Fort Defiance, Ronnit Quintana of Ganado, Bert Arnold of Albuquerque, Andy Valdez of Gallup; brother, Bill Harring of Coton, Calif.; sister, Lindell Chavez of Albuquerque; 25 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Arnold-Valdez was preceded in death by his parents, Tony Valdez, Mary D. Arnold; brother, Rick Valdez; one grandson.

Pallbearers will be Delvin Hill, Michael Arnold, Beau Becenti, Roger Pablo Jr., LeManuel Jim, Ray Macias Jr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Gallup, following services.

Rollie Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Castaneda

ROSWELL — Memorial services for Jerry Benjamin Castaneda, 65, will be in Roswell and Gallup at a later date.

Castaneda died Jan. 20, 2009, in Roswell. He was born July 20, 1943, in Gallup.

Castaneda was raised his grandparents.

Survivors include his wife, Kristine Castaneda of Roswell; daughters, Kimberly Castaneda of Roswell, Rose Gallegos of Portales; mother, Mary Gonzales; sister, Juanita Ramirez of Gallup; two grandchildren.

Castaneda was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Castaneda Sr.; brother, Lawrence Castaneda Jr.; grandparents, Geronimo and Trinidad Castaneda.

Patrick Chee

CHAMBERS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Patrick Chee, 23, will be 10 a.m., Feb. 7, at Ganado Presbyterian Church. Private disposition will be in family plot, Chambers.

Chee died Jan. 25, 2009, in Chambers. He was born July 21, 1985, in Gallp, into the Black Sheep People Clan for the Honey Comb People Clan.

Chee attended Wide Ruins pre-school, Wide Ruins Boarding School and Valley High School.

He worked in Taylor as a roofer. He liked football, baseball, horseback riding, listening to music and traveling.

Survivors include his mother, Belinda Parker; brother, Kendell Parker; sister, Desise Parker.

Chee was preceded in death by his grandparents, Nellie Yazzie, Bennie Parker, Nelson Parker, Eugene and Jack Parker; great-grandfather, Billie Parker; brother, Kendrick Parker.

Pallbearers will be Juan Parker, Johnny Parker, Marcus Parker, Barney Parker, Wilson Parker, Clifford Ashley.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Wide Ruins Chapter House, following burial.

Roger Nelson Sr.

SMOKE SIGNAL — Funeral services for Roger Nelson Sr., 52, will be 10 a.m., Feb. 5, at Church of Nazarene, Smoke, Ariz. The Rev. Ned Begay Sr. will officiate. Burial will be in family plot, Smoke Signal.

Nelson died Jan. 31, 2009, in Pinon. He was born Sept. 4, 1956, in Keams Canyon, into the Deer Springs People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Nelson attended Chinle Boarding School. He worked as a carpenter with the Navajo Nation.

He was a Robeman, member for the Native American Church. His hobbies includes horse back riding.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Cook Nelson of Smoke Signal; sons, Roger Nelson Jr., Roderick Nelson, both of Smoke Signal; daughters, Mildred Nelson, Meladine Smiley, Madeline Nelson, Melinda Nelson, Marlena Nelson, all of Smoke Signal, Matilda Smiley of Navajo; mother, Rose Yazzie of Smoke Signal; brothers, Oscar Roy Nelson, Ricky Nelson, Raymond Nelson, all of Smoke Signal; sisters, Ida Bahe, Rosita Nelson, both of Smoke Signal; grandmother, Alice C. Yazzie of Smoke Signal; 16 grandchildren.

Nelson was preceded in death by his daughter, Rose Marie Nelson; father, Rex James Nelson; grandfather, Ashine Yazzie; sister, Roselyn Yellowman.

Pallbearers will be Oscar Nelson, Johnathan Smiley, Robertson Denezpi, Sean Kelly, Shane Cooke, Cornelius Cooke.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Rose Yazzie’s residence, 3.5 miles east of Smoke Signal Mission, following services.

Daniel Parker

CHAMBERS, Ariz. — Funeral services for Daniel Parker, 47, will be 10 a.m., Feb. 7, at Ganado Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in family plot, Chambers.

Parker died Jan. 25, 2009, in Chambers. He was born Jan. 23, 1962, in Gallup, into the Black Sheep People Clan for the Red House People Clan.

Parker worked in Acoma as a plumber. He loved riding horses, making Kachina dolls, being a auto and diesel mechanic, construction and attending country western dances and rodeos.

Survivors include his sons, Nathaniel Parker of Chambers, Nathan Parker of Tucson; step-sons, Brian Van Winkle of Klagetoh, Leon Van Winkle of Klagetoh; daughters, Sheniel Parker Yannett of Maryland, Danielle Parker Ben of Chinle; brothers, Lester J. Lee of Wide Ruins, Wilson Parker of Sanders, Vernon Parker of Sanders; sisters, Rena Parker, Linda Parker, both of Albuquerque, Belinda Parker of Chambers, Evangeline Parker of Jones Ranch; seven grandchildren.

Parker was preceded in death by his father, Nelson Parker; mother, Nellie Yazzie; grandfather, Billie Parker; son, Brandon Parker.

Pallbearers will be Tim Yazzie, Tommie Begay, Vernon Parker, Brian Van Winkle, Lester J. Lee, Mark Yazzie.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Wide Ruins Chapter House, following services.

Leander Wally

LITTLE WATER — Services are pending for Leander Ben Wally, 35.

Wally died Feb. 2, 2009, in Gallup. He was born July 27, 1973, in Keams Canyon.

A family meeting will be 6 p.m., tonight, Feb. 4, at Little Water Chapter House.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joe Watchman Jr.

CHINLE — Services are pending for Joe L. Watchman Jr., 47.

Watchman died Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009, in Phoenix. He was born May 16, 1961, in Fort Defiance.

Desert View Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Justin Watchman

QUERINO CANYON — Services are pending for Justin Ray Watchman, 17.

Watchman died Feb. 2, 2009, in Querino Canyon. He was born March 21, 1991, in Gallup, into the Blacksheep People Clan for the Bitterwater People Clan.

John Yazzie

FARMINGTON — Services are pending for John Yazzie, 59.

Yazzie died Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, in Farmington. He was born April 10, 1949, in Tse Yatoh, N.M.
