2009 Navajo County Spelling Bee set
By Independent staff

HOLBROOK, Ariz. — The 2009 Navajo County Spelling Bee will be held at 2 p.m. in the George Gardner Performing Arts Center in Holbrook Feb. 11.

The top speller will advance to Phoenix along with 26 other state finalists to determine who will represent Arizona in the National Spelling Bee in Washington May 26-27.

“An Arizona student is eligible to compete if he/she has not passed beyond the eighth grade on or before Feb. 1, 2009, and has not reached his/her 15th birthday before September 1, 2008. Private, public, charter and home-school students may compete. There is no minimum grade or age level at the state or national finals; however, spelling bee officials at the classroom, school or district level may, at their discretion, set a minimum grade and/or age limit,” Tami Phillips, Navajo County Spelling Bee coordinator, said. She noted that any child taking part in the Navajo Nation Spelling Bee is not eligible to participate in any of the county spelling bees or in the Arizona State Spelling Bee.

The home-school spelling bee coordinator is Vicky Dawson. Please contact her at rdawson123@msn.com, if your home-schooled child is interested in participating in the home-school bee.
