GALLUP — The McKinley Citizens’ Recycling Council’s first electronic waste day in Gallup was an overwhelming success. On Jan. 10, a steady stream of vehicles dropped off assorted electronics at Castle Furniture.

“My sincerest thanks for the greatest e-waste recycling event we have ever had. I think it is great to have such an active recycling group working so hard to make recycling work,” Gary Estepp, director of ResourceAd of Albuquerque, said.

In addition to the Gallup e-waste collection, Estepp and his son collected 3.7 tons from Fort Defiance and 4.7 tons from Diné College. With Gallup’s 14.3 tons, a total of 22.7 tons was diverted.

“I know this saved your current landfill a considerable volume, and your county leaders should be grateful,” Estepp said. The company provided a Certificate of Disposal to the recycling council which should make everyone who recycled their computers feel good.

The e-waste day was possible because of a community effort spearheaded by the McKinley Citizens’ Recycling Council with assistance from Allan Landavazo, manager of Castle Furniture/City Council representative and Adrian Marrufo, director of the city of Gallup Solid Waste Department.
