SHIPROCK — A 25-year-old Shiprock man is dead after a high-speed chase Monday that ended with a shooting.

Arnold Dan Jr. was shot and killed, while Kevin Kellywood, 17, was shot but survived, according to FBI spokesman Darrin Jones. Dan, Kellywood and a 24-year-old man whose name was not released allegedly stole liquor from Hogback Mustang on U.S. 64 around 11:15 p.m. Sunday. The three men were inside a white Toyota pickup. Dan was driving.

Navajo Police responding to the theft chased the pickup for nearly 45 minutes and reached speeds exceeding 90 miles per hour, Jones said. Three Navajo Police officers and one New Mexico State Police officer had joined the pursuit by the time it ended at Dan’s residence on Mesa Farm Road outside Shiprock around 12:15 a.m.

Details around the shooting are still not being released. Jones declined to provide the name of the officer that shot Dan, but he said the officer was on foot at the time. The officer fired an undisclosed number of rounds into the pickup as it was approaching him, killing Dan and wounding Kellywood.
