Dorothy Cooke

CROSS CANYON — Funeral services for Dorothy Cooke, 87, will be 1 p.m., today, Jan. 8, at St. Isabel Catholic Mission, Lukachukai.

The Rev. Blane Grein, OFM, will officiate. Burial will be in family plot, Crystal. Visitation will be 12 p.m., today, Jan. 8, at St. Isabel’s Catholic Church.

Cooke died Jan. 3, 2009, in Cross Canyon. She was born Jan. 17, 1921, in Red Lake.

Cooke attended the St. Michael’s Indian School. She was a caregiver, rug weaver and rancher.

Survivors include her husband, Kee Cooke; sons, Jerome Cooke of Cross Canyon; daughter, Anna Marie Sandoval of Lukachukai; brother, Jackie Melvin Jose of Fort Defiance; sister, Dr. Beulah Allen of So’Sila, N.M.

Cooke was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Cynthia Blackgoat; sisters, Elizabeth Lyons, Isabel Begay; brother, Robert Melvin.

Pallbearers will be Charleston Wauneka, Derek Wauneka, Brannon Begay, George A. Sandoval Jr., Jackie Melvin, Jonathan Leonard, Chee Allen.

Silver Creek Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

David Good

GRANTS — Private memorial services for David B. Good, will be held a later date. Cremation has taken place.

Good died Jan. 6, 2009, in Cibola. He was born Feb. 24, 1950, in Mansfield, Oh.

Good and Mary Ann Johnson were married Oct. 13, 1973, in Gillette, Wy. He was a retired officer of Western New Mexico Correctional Facility.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann of Grants; mother, Dorothea Heuett of Grants; brothers, Don, Rex, both of Gallup, John of Weatherford, Texas; sisters, Dorothea (Duffie) Redenbaugh of Denver, Colo., Robin Garner of Monticello, Utah.
Good was preceded in death by his father, Donald Good Sr.; step-father, Leo L. Heuett.

Donald Jefferson

GALLUP — Full Military honors for Donald (Don) Lee Jefferson, 76, will be 2 p.m., Jan. 9, at Fort Morgan National Cemetery, Denver, Colo.

Jefferson died Jan. 3, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born April 8, 1932, in Stillwell, Okla.

Jefferson graduated from Stillwell High School in 1948 and joined the US Army in 1949. He served in both the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Campaign during his 30 year military career. In honor his honor, he received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart along with numerous meritorious honors and medals. He married his wife in 1953. They moved with the Army to Texas, Louisiana, France, Washington, West Virginia, Germany and Colorado. He was actively involved with the military protestant church, often serving as a deacon, or teaching Sunday school, or leading adult Bible education classes wherever he was stationed. While in the Army, Jefferson received his bachelor of Art in history and master of art in psychology from the University of Maryland. His final tour of duty was at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs, Colo. After retiring from the Army in 1979, he worked for the State of Wyoming in the Department of Corrections where he worked as a prison psychologist and then managed the work farm.

He then moved to Espanola where he worked for the State of New Mexico in the State Health Department. Jefferson moved to Gallup in 1993, where he managed the Ramada Inn. He enjoyed country music and old western TV shows and movies. He was always quick with a smile and joke. He cared for those around him, especially his employees at the Ramada Inn.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude IIs Flaig of Fort Collins, Colo.; sons, Ron of Valdostia, Ga., John of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters, Rita Clark of Fort Collins, Colo., Yvonne Gray-Garcia of Heidelberg, Germany, Carol Borchert of Fort Collins; sister, Opha Pearl Jefferson of Kansas City, Mo.;10 grandchildren.

Jefferson was preceded in death by his parents, Elda Pearl and George Harrison Jefferson; brother, Neil Jefferson; one grandson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local humane society or hospital foundation in Jefferson’s honor.

Travis Laughlin

GALLUP — Services are pending for Travis Edwin Laughlin, 40.

Laughlin died Jan. 6, 2009, in Albuquerque. He was born Jan. 6, 1969, in Gallup.

A family meeting will be 5 p.m., tonight, Jan. 8, at Coyote Canyon Chapter House.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Stanley Lewis

RAMAH — Funeral services for Stanely Delwyn Lewis, 91, were 10 a.m., today, Jan. 8, at the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, Ramah. Bishop Jerry Tietyen officiated. Burial was in Ramah. Visitation was 9 a.m., today, Jan. 8, at the Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church.

Lewis died Jan. 2, 2009, in Ramah. He was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Ramah.

Lewis was in the Army. He worked for the railroad for 3 years, for the Forest Department for 10 years, and was a rancher.

Survivors include his brothers, Marvin J. Lewis of Ramah, Even Lewis of Gallup, Ben Lewis of Tayler, Ariz.; sisters, Elsie Lambson of Ramah, Elda Johnston of Ramah, Venice Jarkson of Farmington.

Lewis was preceded in death by his father, Jessy Lewis; mother, Blanche Lewis.

Pallbearers were Jesse Lewis, Rex Lewis, Michael Lewis, John Lewis, Bryant Lewis, Dennis Lewis.

Rollie Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Erlinda Mahooty

RAMAH — Services are pending for Erlinda Sue Mahooty, 43.

Mahooty died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, in Zuni. She was born July 18, 1965, in Gallup.

Caleb Ramone

CHURCHROCK — Funeral services for Caleb Patrick Ramone, 18, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, Gallup. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m., one hour prior to service.

Ramone died Dec. 31, 2008, in Churchrock. He was born June 17, 1990, in Gallup, into the Red House People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Ramone attended NMYCA, Roswell. He was employed on the east side McDonalds.
Survivors include his parents, Annie Mae Benally of Churchrock, Albert Ramone of Smith Lake; brothers, Anthony Ramone, Corbitt Ramone of Churchrock, Alton Ramone of Grants, Christopher Ramone of Whiteriver; sisters, Charymane Ramone, Antonia Ramone, both of Whiteriver; grandmother, Helen E. Ramone of Smith Lake.

Ramone was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tom and Mildred Benally, Jim Ramone.

Pallbearers will be Anthony Ramone, Alton Ramone, Tyler Williams, Chad Tsosie, Kirk Benally, Lonnie Williams.

Roy Vandever

PREWITT — Services for Roy Vandever, 72, will be 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Church, 1010 Bondad, Grants. Burial will be in Grants Memorial Park. The Rev. Jacob Gonzales will officiate.

Vandever died Jan. 2, 2009, in Folsom, Calif. He was born Oct. 23, 1936, in Prewitt.

Vandever was employed for many years with the Navajo Nation as a council delegate with the Baca-Prewitt Chapter House.

Survivors include his daughters, Cassandra Calladitto of Prewitt, Cindy Howe of Prewitt, Verna Kee of Albuquerque, Sheila Vandever of Prewitt, Sharon Vandever of Prewitt; son, Jeremy Vandever of Prewitt; sisters, Lillian Garcia, Nellie Vandever, both of Santo Domingo Pueblo, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren.

Vandever was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Vandever; parents, Charley Little Vandever, Rosie Platero Vandever; sons, Sherwood Vandever, Jerome Vandever; brothers, Thompson Vandever, Nelson Vandever.

Pallbearers will be Mark Calladitto, Myles Calladitto, Larry Etsitty Jr., Jose Pizano, Duane Begay, Wallace Chacho, Louis Beareagle, Jonathan Nelson, Virgil Vandever.

Alice Watchman

LUPTON — Funeral services for Alice S. Watchman, 85, will be 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 9, at Cope Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Ron Yazzie will officiate. Burial will be in Lupton, family plot.
Watchman died Jan. 3, 2009, in Gallup. She was born July 14, 1923, in Mexican Springs, into the Saline Water People Clan for the Towering House People Clan.

Watchman was a homemaker and a weaver.

She had been a resident of Red Rock Care Center at the time of her death. She lived in Lupton until she was placed in the home.

Survivors include her son, Pierce Denetclaw Sr. of Lupton; daughter, Linda B. Cleveland of Lupton; brother, Joe Upshaw of Denver, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild.

Watchman was preceded in death by her parents, Bah Upshaw, Joe Smith; sisters, Edith S. Thompson, Esther Yazzie; brother, James Smith.

Pallbearers will be Ryan R. Whitman, Lionel R. Whitman, Pierce Denetclaw Jr., Terry Upshaw, Lencho Chavez, Troy Denetclaw.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Lupton Chapter House, following services.
