Continental Divide Co-op fails
to make its quorum

462 members attend, but 506 were needed for meeting

GRANTS — For the second year running, the Continental Divide Electric Co-op came close to attracting the numbers needed to hold a board election, but missed the target.

In spite of numbers falling short of the 506 members needed to conduct business, the co-op held a fine community event and registered 462 members by the noon cut-off time.

“Whenever you have a nice day and other activities going on, it’s very difficult to get a quorum,” CDEC General Manager Richard Shirley said.

About 45 organizations joined the co-op in presenting the event. CDEC spokesman Mac Juarez said the co-op did not have figures on the total attendance.

The quorum for CDEC annual meetings is 3 percent of the membership registered by the deadline. The co-op counted 16,871 members registered by the March 31 deadline, Juarez said.

Because the co-op did not have enough members present to hold he meeting, at-large board member Keith Gottlieb, who faced challenger Ruben Sandoval, retained his seat. Long-time board members Lynn Head of Milan, for District 2, and Darrel Elkins of Thoreau, for District 7, ran unopposed and retained their board seats, as well.
