Earth Day activities are NEXT weekend By Barry Heifner Imagine my dismay Friday morning when I received an e-mail from Betsy Windisch saying the Independent had mistakenly reported the Earth Day activities at the United Methodist were today, rather than next Saturday. Wow! I thought, how did that happen? How could we make such a mistake? Unfortunately, it was easy. Earth Day is officially Tuesday. I asked staff writer Bill Donovan to put together a preview on the planned Earth Day events in Gallup. Being a borderline calendar-challenged individual, I was under the impression the Earth Day activities were coming up this weekend and couldnt allow the event to pass without letting our readers know what was planned. Donovan, being the good foot soldier he is, dutifully went out to the United Methodist Church and interviewed Windisch and filed his story. A photographer was dispatched and all was right with the world or so I thought. The fact that the activities were not this weekend seemed not to bother Donovan. After all, he is used to us working several days ahead on a story and probably just thought my penchant for planning had somehow run amok and I had things lined out a full week in advance. Not so. First, I must apologize to our readers for the error and misinforming you with the wrong date for Earth Day events. Second, I must apologize to Windisch and all the volunteers who have been working hard to get Gallup Earth Day rolling and for taking a full week away from them. Im sure they need all the time they can get to accomplish everything that needs to be done in preparation for Earth Day. Watch next week for a new and updated report on Earth Day activities. Now, Im going to go home and enjoy a big dish of crow. |
