Napolitano: Wait on other ‘squaw’ sites

PHOENIX (AP) — Gov. Janet Napolitano says she wants a federal commission to act on the renaming of former Squaw Peak in Phoenix to honor Army soldier Lori Piestewa before she presses for renaming other Arizona sites that include “squaw” in their names.

The state renamed the peak five years ago and the U.S. Board of Geographic Names is expected to decide next week whether to change the name on maps and other federal publications.

It’s been five years since Piestewa was killed in Iraq, making the Arizonan the first female American Indian soldier to die in combat while serving in the U.S. military.

Napolitano says the old name was objectionable but says controversy over handling of the peak’s renaming prompted her to decide not to press for renaming of other sites until after the federal commission acts.
