GALLUP — Amidst recent burglaries, the latest is a peculiar case.

David Torrez, 52, of 320 E. Wilson Ave. A in Gallup, walked in a bathrobe and boxer shorts to a nearby trailer about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

Torrez was apparently drunk, according to Gallup Police Officer Valerie Wilson’s report.

“Mr. Torrez smelled of intoxicating beverage,” the report reads.

Wilson also describes Torrez as mumbling and speaking as if he was sleepy.

The resident of the trailer had called police to escort Torrez home, which they did. The resident then went inside and locked the door and police left the area.

But less than an hour later Torrez had returned, this time breaking the door hinges to gain entry. Police returned to the area to arrest Torrez, who suddenly decided to walk back to his own trailer, disregarding the orders to place his hands behind his back. Police Tased Torrez, cuffed him and put him in the cruiser.

They booked Torrez at Gallup McKinley Adult Detention Center on one count of burglary, a third-degree felony, and one count of resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.

A look at Torrez’ court records reveals more than a dozen prior charges ranging from shoplifting, assault, battery, resisting arrest and, in April of this year, aggravated battery and criminal trespass.
