Movie Gallery sponsoring food drive

GRANTS — A special food drive is under way at the Movie Gallery, 698 E. Roosevelt Drive.

Store Manager Megan Matthews said any area resident who brings in three cans of food or three non-perishable items and rents a movie will receive one free movie rental.

The food will be donated to the Community Food Bank in Grants prior to Thanksgiving to help provide food to those families that need help, she said.

The drive has been under way for a week, but as of Thursday afternoon, no donations had been received, she said.

The drive will continue until before Christmas so that additional food may be given, again, to the food bank, this time to help with families' needs at Christmas.

Any kind of food is acceptable, as long as it does not need refrigeration, she said.

"We are trying to do things for the community," she said.

The Grants store is part of a district out of El Paso with 17 stores. Nationwide there are more than 2,000 Movie Galleries.

Most of the movies are now on DVDs, she said. Most of the remaining VHS tapes have gone on sale.

DVDs rent for $3.99, plus tax, for five days, older ones are $3.29, plus tax, for five days and family and children's movies are 99 cents, plus tax, for five days, she said.

The store is also planning a coat drive for children for the winter but Matthews said she has not worked out all the details yet.

"Anyone who wants to bring in a coat, we will accept it gladly," she said.

For Christmas, there will be a special Christmas tree with an ornament or an angel with the name of a child and his or her clothing needs and the toys they like.

Matthews said those participating will select an ornament or an angel, get the clothes and toys and return all items to the Movie Gallery to be sent out at Christmas.

Store hours are 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m.-11 p.m., Friday and Saturdays and 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Sundays.

Anyone seeking more information or how else to participate is asked to contact Matthews at the Movie Gallery at (505) 285-3388.
