Nageezi chapter house burns
By Independent Staff

NAGEEZI — The Nageezi Chapter House caught fire recently, causing severe structural damage. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Federal investigators probed the debris Thursday.

According to a news release from the Eastern Navajo Agency, which quotes an "unreliable source," the Nageezi Chapter Administration has been identified as having problems with the Navajo Nation Ethics and Rules. The matter of allegations has already been dealt with at the tribal administration level.

The Nageezi Chapter has suffered from vandalism and the community of Nazeezi suffers from many social problems including a lack of economic and social supports.

The 10,000-square-foot building housed government offices and documents for the Navajo tribe's Nageezi chapter.

The chapter house was the main source of contact for the Nageezi chapter members. The Nageezi Community Multi-Use Center will now host the community meetings and Nageezi Chapter Administrators will use the community chapter mobile home. Telephone and fax lines will be in operation soon, the release stated. For further information contact 505-486-9291.

A spokeswoman for the San Juan County Fire Department said investigators from the FBI and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were examining the site. FBI officials didn't immediately return telephone messages seeking comment.
