Pair of district schools meet AYP

By Bill Donovan
Staff Writer

GALLUP — Two schools in the Gallup-McKinley County Public School district made AYP this year — Red Rock Elementary and Roosevelt Elementary.

Two others met all of the math and reading requirements Thoreau Elementary and Tobe Turpen Elementary but failed to meet the requirement of 92 percent attendance. Thoreau Elementary had an attendance rate of 90.83 while Tobe Turpen had an attendance of 91.89.

Last year no schools in the district met AYP.

Several schools in the district met AYP for all students for math and English, but they failed to meet AYP because a segment of the schools' population did not meet one or both of the requirements in this area.

AYP Annual Yearly Progress sets goals that schools must meet to pass. It not only takes the average for all students, but also breaks down the school population into categories like Native American students, English language learners and economically disadvantaged.

To meet AYP, schools must pass in every category. Failing in one category even if it is by one student's low score means the whole school failed.

Here are the results for each of the schools within the city of Gallup:

  • Gallup Central High — passed reading but failed math for all students.

  • Gallup High — passed both reading and math for all students but failed in math for the Native American, English language learners and economically disadvantaged categories.

  • Gallup Junior High — passed math for all students but failed in reading.

  • Gallup Middle School — passed reading but failed in math.

  • Indian Hills Elementary — passed in both reading and math for all students but failed in reading for English language learners.

  • Jefferson Elementary — passed in both reading and math for all students but failed in reading in the Native American category.

  • John F. Kennedy Mid — passed in both reading and math for all students but failed in both reading and math among Native Americans and English language learners and math in the economically disadvantage category.

  • Juan De Onate Elementary — passed reading but failed in math for all students.

  • Lincoln Elementary — passed in both reading and math for all students but failed in reading among English learners.

  • Red Rock Elementary — passed AYP.

  • Rocky View Elementary — passed in math but failed in reading for all students.

  • Roosevelt Elementary — met AYP.

  • Stagecoach Elementary — failed in both reading and math for all students.

  • Tobe Turpen Elementary — passed in both reading and math but failed in attendance.
