Staff Report
GALLUP The Gallup Civil Air Patrol Raptor Squadron
hosted a mini encampment for cadets from Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Durango
and Gallup on March 4, 5 and 6. The mini encampment was held at Kamp Kiwanis,
south of Gallup.
A total of 55 cadets participated in the event that stared Friday evening
and lasted through Sunday afternoon.
The goal of encampments is to give cadets an opportunity to learn about
cadet leadership, aerospace education and emergency services.
During this time, three cadets and one senior member passed a first aid
course. All cadets studied compass navigation and rocket aerodynamics.
One of the highlights of the weekend was the rocket launch.
Bill Hoedebeck of the Boys & Girls Club gave a presentation called
Drug Demand Reduction. Cadets were given facts to help them decide not
to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol or smoke marijuana. All three are called
gateway drugs because they lead to harder drugs.
Core values of the Civil Air Patrol are: "Integrity first, service
before self, excellence in all we do, respect." Cadets practice their
core values during encampments and at weekly meetings. They are taught
to be cadets "24-7" and must display these traits at all times.
If your child might be cadet material, you can contact the Raptor Squadron

are held every Thursday beginning at 6:15 at the Gallup Airport.
