Marvin Johnson

GRANTS — Memorial services for Marvin Richard "Dick" Johnson, 71, were at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15 at the First United Methodist Church.

Johnson died June 9. He was born July 24, 1934 in Madelia, Minn.

Johnson enlisted in the US Marine Corp following graduation and was attached to the American Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua. After his discharge he remained in Nicaragua and taught PE, history and English. He coordinated the GED/ABE program before becoming the GED instructor for the Pueblo of Laguna. He recently served on the Board of Directors for Roberta's Place in Grants.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; sons, Richard, James; and six grandchildren.

Johnson was preceded in death by his former wife, Adela Marenco de Chavez; daughters, Kathy and Maria Johnson.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Roberta's Place or the University of New Mexico cancer and research and treatment center, development office, 900 Camino de Salud, Albuquerque, N.M. 97131


Tony Johnson Sr.

CROWNPOINT — Services for Tony K. Johnson Sr., 74, will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 18, at the Christian Reformed Church in Crownpoint. Burial will follow at the family plot in Dalton Pass, N.M.

Johnson died June 13 in Albuquerque. He was born Jan 9, 1931 in Mariano Lake. He attended the Sherman Institute in Los Angeles and worked for BIA for 30 years. He served on various committees with the Behavioral Health Department and the Crownpoint Senior Center, Pre-School Unit 1. Johnson was a rancher and cattleman and a Navajo Beautyway medicineman. His hobbies included branding cattle, riding horses, doing beadwork and attending rodeos.

Survivors include his wife Christine Perry; sons, Bill K. Johnson, Ervin Johnson, Tony K. Johnson Jr.; daughters, Lori Burns, Loritta Johnson, Eleanor Henry, Thelma Johnson and Geraldine Johnson; brother, Ned K. Johnson, Sr.; sister, Irene Johnson, 23 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, Tom K. Johnson and Lillie Johnson, first wife, Elsie T. Johnson and sister, Mary J. Deel.

Pallbearers will be Carletts Henry, Ike Johnson, Tony K. Johnson Jr., Ned K. Johnson, Jr., and Nelson Huskon Jr., Nelson Huskon, Sr.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Crownpoint Chapter House.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.


Henry Francisco Sr.

TOHAJILEE — Funeral services for Henry Herbert Francisco Sr., 74, will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 18 at St. Marys Catholic Church, Tohatchi. Father John Middlestadt will officiate. Burial will follow in the Naschitti community cemetery.

Francisco died June 12 in Albuquerque. He was born March 15, 1931 in Naschitti into the Towering House People Clan for the Water Edge People Clan.

Francisco was a union member with N.M. bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen #2. He retired in 1993. Francisco was also a sheepherder.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie Mae Francisco of To'hajilee; sons, Cecil Henry of Naschitti, Arnold Francisco, Manuel Francisco Jr., both of To'hajilee, Calvin Francisco of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters, Carol J. Abeita, Imogene R. Francisco both of To'hajilee; brother, Nelson Francisco Sr. of Naschitti; sisters, Lillie E. Francisco, Lorena Carl, Juanita Willie all of Naschitti, Anna Bitsie of Kirtland, Ruby Johnson of Hogback; 30 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Francisco was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Olive M. Francisco; sister, Eva Nabahe; brother, Herman Francisco and son, Milton Francisco.

Pallbearers will be Martin Francisco, Aaron Francisco, Arland Francisco, Anthony R. Secatero, James R. Secatero and Justin Shorty.

A reception will follow at the Naschitti Chapter House following burial.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.


Sostena Archunde

GRANTS — Funeral Mass for Sostena "Tena" Archunde, 71, will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 20 at St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church. Father Alberto Avella will officiate. Burial will follow in the Grants Memorial Park.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 19 from 3-6 p.m. at Grants Mortuary Chapel. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church.

Archunde died June 14 in Albuquerque. She was born Sept. 3, 1933 in Seboyeta.

Archunde was a member of St. Vivian's Catholic Church and was a resident of the area since 1954.

Survivors include her husband, Senovio Archunde Jr. of Albuquerque; daughters, Kathy Maes, Renee Archunde-Contreras both of Albuquerque; son, Mary Archunde Sr., of Albuquerque; sisters, Agnes Bell of Las Vegas, Nev., Elsie DeBaca of Los Lunas and Betty Garcia of Albuquerque; brothers, Manuel Salazar and Lloyd Salazar of Albuquerque, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Salazar and Osefina Marquez Salazar; sisters, Erminia Padilla, Josephine Dunworth, Dometilla Rhinethart and Fidel Salazar.

Pallbearers will be Clint Archunde, Gene Archunde, Marty Archunde Jr., Matthew Archunde, Lloyd Salazar and Johnny Dunworth.

Grants Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.


Silvestrita Valdez

GRANTS — Graveside services for Silvestrita Valdez, 85, were at 11 a.m. today, June 17 at the Mission San Rafael Cemetery. Fr. Matthew Keller officiated.

Valdez died June 7 in Grants. She was born Oct. 1, 1919 in San Rafael.

She was a member of the St. Teresa de Avila Catholic Church and the Grants Senior Citizens and she was a resident of Grants for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Celso Valdez.
