I-40 rollover injures one of 7 passengers

By Leslie Wood
Staff Writer

GALLUP — Officials are citing sleep deprivation as the most likely cause of a vehicle rollover on Interstate 40 this morning.

Under Sheriff John Yearley, a spokesman for the McKinley County Sheriff's Department, said a 1994 Ford Probe that was carrying seven people rolled over at least once on the Interstate near Mile Marker 47 at about 6:50 a.m.

The driver, whose name was not released as of press time, sustained serious injuries due to the accident and was transported to the University of New Mexico hospital in Albuquerque for treatment.

Yearley said the vehicle's passengers did not sustain life-threatening injuries and were treated locally.

All of the vehicle's occupants are residents of Mexico. Yearley said the department's accident reconstructionist Sgt. Albert Benally was at the scene to determine the official cause of the early-morning crash.

Officials did not release the remaining passengers' names pending notification of family members.
