Dean A. Smith

LUKACHUKAI — Funeral services for Dean A. Smith, 40, will be at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 31 at St. Isabel Church. Burial will be in a family cemetery.

Smith died Jan. 27 in Albuquerque. He was born July 15, 1964 in Arizona.

Survivors include his parents, John C. Smith Sr. and Mary Hickman; brothers, Herbert Smith Jr., John C. Smith Jr.; sisters, Mary "Mirdy" Begay, Rose A. Smith, and Joanne Henrietta Shields.

Dean was preceded in death by Fannie and Francis Hickman; Atcitty and Yahdezbaa Silversmith.

Pallbearers will be Alexandro Begay, Devin Yazzie, James Shay, Sr., Vernon Kaye and Adrian Smith.

Cope Memorial is in charge of arrangements.


Jerry Shirley

DEERSPRING — Services for Jerry Shirley, 51, will be at 10 a.m. on Feb. 1 at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. Father Gilbert Schneider, O.F.M., and Deacon Wilson C. Gorman will officiate.

A rosary was recited Sunday, Jan. 30.

Shirley died Jan. 27 in Deersprings. He was born Sept. 11, 1953 in Fort Defiance into the Salt Water People Clan for the Honeycomb Rock People Clan.

Shirley worked as a rancher and for the BIA. He was a member of the Sawmill Chapter and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his mother, Jennie Shirley; brothers, Ernest Shirley, Alfred Shirley; and sister, Julia Gorman.

Shirley was preceded in death by his father, Johnny Shirley; paternal grandmother, Mary Shirley; paternal grandfather, Ned Begay and maternal grandfather, Charlie Yazzie.

Pallbearers will be Ernest Shirley, Sr.,Ernest Shirley, Jr., Norman Wauneka, Edison Shirley, John-Phillip Gorman, Harold Shirley and LeRoy Shirley.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Francis Catholic Hall.

 

Correction
Clara Morgan obituary in Jan. 24 edition. She died Jan. 19 in Chandler and was buried Jan. 25 in Sacaton, Ariz.
