SANTA FE Funeral services for William Elgie Fields, 79, will
be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 31 at the Sweeney Convention Center. Burial
will take place in the Santa Fe National Cemetry at 1 p.m. with full
military honors.
Devotional services will be held Sunday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. at the Sweeney
Convention Center.
Fields died Jan. 25 in Santa Fe. He was born July 21, 1925 in Vian,
Okla.
Fields attended the University of New Mexico and earned a B.S. in civil
engineering in 1950 and worked as a civil and hydrolics engineer. During
his career, he served as Chief of Indian Affairs, worked with the National
Park Service from 1958 to 1987, worked with Navajo, Zuni and Hopi tribes.
Fields also worked with Indian programs to better their social and economic
life. He served in WWII in the Marine Corp and worked with the Navajo
Code Talkers. He retired as Colonel in the Army and Brigadier General
in the New Mexico State Guard.
Survivors include the mother of his children, Doris Madox Taylor of
Tucson; wife, Pricilla Fields of Santa Fe; sister, Juanita Batchelor
of Fla.; children, Frank Fields of Tucson, Wendy Fields-Montoya, Crystal
Fields-Lucero, Nick Sanchez, Jimmy Sanchez, Rose Cordova all of Santa
Fe, Antonio Sanchez of Dixon, Barbara Sanchez of Blanco; 15 grandchildren,
and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tate and Eva Fields.
Pallbearers will be Tom Cordova, Jerry Lucero, Phillip Montoya, Jr.,
Dion D'Angelico, Alex Bransford and Sean William "Bill" Fields.
Louise Tony
GALLUP Services for Louise Ofelia Tony, 56, will be at 10 a.m.,
Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Gallup Christian Center, (The Door) in Gallup.
Burial will follow at the Gallup City Cemetery.
Tony died Jan. 27 in Gallup. She was born Dec. 28, 1949 in Rock Point,
Ariz.
Tony's hobbies included arts and crafts, crossword puzzles and listening
to music.
Survivors include her husband Sherman Tony; sons, Brian Bronson, Rocky
Tony and Victor Van Pelt, all of Gallup and Stoney Tony of Chandler,
Ariz.; daughters, Gina Paquin, Flornaora Tony, Leandra Tony, all of
Gallup; mother Ella W. Tracey of Gallup; sisters, Zonnie Willie of Standing
Rock, N.M. and Lucy Antone of St. Michaels, Ariz., and 16 grandchildren.
Tony was preceded in death by her father Tracey Tracey son, Vincent
Tony and sister Adelle Silversmith.
Pallbearers will be Brian Tony, Bronson Toney, Stoney Tony, Rocky Tony,
Matthew Overton, Byran Paquin and Dwayne Paquin.
Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Sam Smith
SAWMILL Services for Sam Smith, 92, will be at 10 a.m. on Monday,
Jan. 31 at Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament, Fort Defiance. Burial will
follow at the family plot in Sawmill, ARiz.
Smith died Jan. 27 in Phoenix. He was born Sept. 22, 1912 in Sawmill
into the Bitter Water People clan for the Edge Water People Clan.
Smith worked at the old lumber mill in Sawmill and also worked for NFPI
in Navajo. At the time of his retirement he was employed with NECA.
He lived in Chinle and Sawmill.
Survivors include his sons Jimmy Smith of Sebeque, Ariz., and Gilbert
Begay of Crystal, N.M.; daughters, Jessie Williams, Earlene Frazier,
Pearlene Begay and Leona Laughing, all of Sawmill, Ariz. and one sister,
Gertrude Brown of Sawmill.
Pallbearers will be family members.
Ben Sam Lee
SALINA SPRINGS Funeral services for Ben Sam Lee, 60, were today,
Jan. 29, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Chinle. Father Blaine,
O.F.M. officiated.
Lee died Jan. 26 in Phoenix. He was born July 10, 1944 in Salina Springs
into the Many Goats People Clan for the Bitterwater People Clan.
Lee attended Intermountian School. He worked for the Railroad and was
a rancher. He was a medicine man in the Native American Church. Lee
enjoyed Native music and horses.
Survivors include his mother, Delphine Lee; brothers, Kee Tso Lee, Billy
Sam Lee, Alfred Sam Lee, Mike Sam Lee; sisters, Isabelle Burbank, Mary
Shirley, Adeline Lee, Elsie Tracy and Darlene Curley.
Lee was preceded in death by his father, Sam Lee; sister Hasbah Lee
Curley.
Pallbearers were Johnny Armstrong, Sr., Bobby Curley, James Burbank,
Robert Curley, Jr., Ricky Manheimer and Jimmy Beall.
Cope Memorial was in charge of arrangements.
Betty Lou Cobb
GRANTS Funeral services for Betty Lou Cobb, 76, will be held
on Monday, Jan. 31 with a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grants
Mortuary Chapel. A graveside service will follow Grants Memorial Park
with Maurice Duffy officiating.
A memorial talk will be given at 2:30 p.m. at the Grants Kingdom Hall
of Jehovah's Witnesses led by Joseph Henley.
Cobb was born on May, 16, 1928 in Cushing.
She was a Jehovah's Witness, and spent over 20 years as a Pioneer Minister.
She is survived by her husband Cecil Cobb of Grants; daughter, Kathy
Scyrkels of Grants; son, Bill Cobb of Albuquerque; step-mother, Mary
Swingles of Phoenix, AZ.; sister, Mary Fran Karry of Okla.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Louis and Opal Hull.
Pallbearers will be Tom Habiger, Jim Smith, Reyes Romero Jr., Bill VanCamp,
Joe Habiger, and David Habiger.
Correction
In Friday's obituary for Stella Saucedo, her mother,
Mary Rodriguez Saucedo was listed as deceased and she is alive.
