GRANTS Two new school board members, Earl Chavez and Mark Thompson,
will be sworn in at the Grants-Cibola County school board meeting Tuesday.
The agenda does not include reorganization of the board to select new
board officers, but that could happen during the meeting.
A presentation on how to prevent future incidents like the one that occurred
Feb. 15th at Grants High School (GHS) during the basketball game is also
on the agenda.
During the game, fans from Bernalillo became so rowdy that a father and
his 18-year-old daughter have now been arrested and charged with multiple
felonies including assault and battery on peace officers.
A third individual, a male from Albuquerque has had an arrest warrant
issued and New Mexico State Police are seeking him.
The presentation on this incident is described as a "plan to rectify."
A presentation about a trip several students from Laguna-Acoma Middle/High
School will be taking to Germany in June is slated to be made to the school
board.
The trip, including a side trip to Paris, is expected to last nearly three
weeks. The trip is part of the annual German-LAHS student exchange program
that is in its sixth year.
Students from LAHS have been conducting fund-raisers to help cover costs.
The agenda also includes a presentation on a planned trip to France by
members of the French Club.
Students will be leaving Tuesday and returning March 26.
The trip is centered around students learning about France's history,
culture and language, as presented in a letter to the board by sponsor-teacher
Nancy Sims-West.
The agenda also includes:
- Title VII Indian Education Grants application
- Budget adjustment requests for the Reading First program
- Update on the collective bargaining contract with Cibola County Federation
of Union School Employees
- The superintendent's contract
- Multi-year contracts for administrators
- The school calendar for 2005-2006
- A closed executive session that states the topics are collective bargaining,
pending litigation and personnel.
The meeting is at 6 p.m., in the board room on the southwest corner of
Washington Avenue and North First Street, on the South campus of GHS.
