Science students to be guests at today's school board meeting
Four from GHS will attend Phoenix fair

GRANTS — Grants/Cibola County School Board members have a full agenda to go through tonight, and although most of it is housekeeping items, four students who are making a science fair trip will be recognized.

According to the agenda, four local students have been selected to attend the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix May 8-15.

Grants High School biology instructor Shelby L. Alexander said the students will have the opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with scientific professionals, researchers, university professors and students from around the world at the week-long fair.

Serge Shkuro, a senior at Grants High School, will be exhibiting his project, "Analysis of Protein Content in Potential Food Allergens" at the fair.

Rebecca Alexander, a Grants High School freshman, will be exhibiting her project, Do Lichens Have Antimicrobial Properties."

Attending as alternates and student observers are Kenna Losito, a junior at GHS, for her project, "Medicinal Plants of the Southwest," and Gilberto Gutierrez, a GHS senior for his project: "Moo've Over! Is Penicillin a Thing of the Past?"

The students are part of the presentation portion of the school board meeting.

In other matters the board will:

  • Hear a special education focus report.

  • Hear summer school information.

  • Approve a district calendar.

  • Hear the district report card.

  • Approve new hires, resignations and retirements.

  • Hear budget information for the 2005-2005 year.

  • Hear an audit report for the 2003-2004 year.

  • Approve budget adjustment requests.

  • Approve the final reading of the Title IX Policy.

  • Review an organizational chart.

  • Hear a technology plan update.

The school board meeting begins at 6 p.m. today in the school board meeting room.
