WINDOW ROCK — After two weeks of staying at home,
committees of the Navajo Nation Council are on the move and traveling
again, to Flagstaff
and Las Vegas, Nev., for meetings this week.
During the past two weeks only the Resources Committee ventured outside
the reservation, journeying to Farmington one day in a series of on and
off-reservation meetings.
The panel is working on the third draft of the San Juan River water rights
settlement which might go to the council Dec. 14 and 15 if the Ethics-Rules
Committee approves
the pre-Christmas special session in its meeting on Dec. 13.
All or some of the eight members of the Resources Committee were scheduled
to leave today for Las Vegas, Nevada and are due to return Saturday.
All or some of the seven members of the Public Safety Committee are scheduled
to spend Thursday at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff after conducting
a two-day study session in Window Rock Monday and Tuesday.
Six of the eight members of the Ethics-Rules Committee have said they will
travel Friday to San Francisco to attend the Council on Government Ethics Laws
convention
Sunday through Wednesday.
Several panels also are traveling on the reservation. The Education Committee
is conducting public hearings Monday in Shiprock, Tuesday at Grey Hills Academy
in Tuba City, Wednesday at Many Farms High School, Thursday at the Fort Defiance
Chapter House and Friday at Wingate High School.
Monday the Transpiration-Community Development Committee went to the Holiday
Inn in Chinle to meet, with the Health-Social Services Committee going to Crownpoint
Monday and Tuesday.
Sub-committees also met with a Government Services Committee sub-panel gathering
in Window Rock today. Two of the Budget-Finance Committee's sub-panels are
listed on the weekly schedule, with the contract-grant compliance group gathering
in
Window Rock, Monday. The B-FC's sub-panel to amend the Appropriations Act is
going to Shiprock today and Wednesday for its meeting.
Council Speaker Lawrence Morgan has to approve off-reservation meeting travel.
