WINDOW ROCK — Here is the summary
of Thursday's Navajo Nation Council actions during the second day of
a three-day special session:
- By a 61-0 vote, accepted the Water Rights
Commission report on the proposed San
Juan River settlement. (See related story.)
- By a 41-31 vote, tabled and thus killed the proposed six-year capital improvement
plan with a directive for the Transportation-Community Development Committee
to return with a complete and properly prepared plan for the fall session in
October.
- By a 21-36 vote, rejected a bill to take 10 percent of the gross general fund
and require it be used for capital improvements.
- By a 74-0 vote, adopted the condolence resolution for the late Benjamin
Curtis, one of the two delegates for the Ganado and Kinlichee chapters.
He served
on the 15th, 17th, 18th and 20th Councils, beginning in 1983, serving
on the Ethics-Rules,
Judiciary and Public Safety committees. He was the vice-chair of the
seven-member Public Safety committee when he died. Curtis, noted for
his cheerfulness,
also was nicknamed "Coach" for organizing the council's men's
basketball team.
- Speaker Lawrence Morgan opened the day's business at 20:25 a.m. with 50 delegates
answering the roll call, with lunch from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. when 63 members
answered the roll call. He recessed at 7:05 p.m.
Of the nine matters on the agenda,
four remain to be addressed today (Friday).
They include raising the debt limit three-fold to 25 percent of the general
fund, repealing the gambling referendum and reclaiming the approximately $194,000
allocated
for it, firing Attorney General Louis Denetsosie and adopting the fiscal year
2003 audit. |
